Student Response System (aka “Clicker”)

Student Response Systems enable students to participate in presentations or lectures by submitting responses to questions using a keypad or other hand-held/computer device. Students responses are tallied and can be viewed by the instructor and/or displayed on a projection screen.

I have never used this type of system. I can imagine it would be particulary useful with large class sizes. Has anyone else had experience with these?

We have iClicker technology at Georgetown. The students love it. It’s really engaging. It takes a little extra pre-planning to include items that they can “vote on” aka multiple choice questions in your lecture. The software is easy to load onto your computer. All you need in the classroom beyond your computer and LCD projector is the receiving unit and the clickers. Each iClicker runs about $25. I don’t know how much the receiver costs but I could find out.

I think I used a system similar to iClicker at the National Geographic Society museum. It was engaging for the young and old!

If you like this technology, check out http://polleverywhere.com — an online audience response system. One of the presenters at the conference I was at used it; we voted by texting a number through our cell phones, just like American Idol. The presenters projected a graph of the results that updated in real time. It’s free for under 30 person groups and up to 1000 responses per month.
